Lili Child
of Geos is one of those games that somebody recommended that I play, and I did,
asking myself later whether it was a good choice. Should I just play AAA games
or continue to lose my time with games like this? It is more of an existential question
at this point, rather than a jab at the game itself.
For all it sets out to be, Lili
delivers. It is an Indie adventure game, and as such offers catchy, attractive
graphics, and interesting yet repetitive gameplay, but not much else. The scenes
and graphics are colorful, and the level design is quite decent, but it is
obvious from the start that this is not a big budget game.
One of the biggest indicators of this
is the sound. All the characters that you meet, including the titular one, have
no voices. Whether it was a choice from the team or a budget concern, it is responsible
for making this game less memorable than it could have been.
The gameplay is rather simplistic, and
as mentioned before, repetitive, even though it boasts a large number of quests.
Most of the time you will run around the island and its neighborhoods, no more
than four if memory serves, and fight the enemies by picking plants from their
heads. Later on, they will become more difficult, but never frustrating, unless
they run away and you have to go across half the map to get to them.
If picking plants from enemies’ heads sounds confusing, don’t be alarmed. In practice it just means using your mouse in a sweeping fashion and trying to do it before the time limit, sometimes using special items to help you. The game was initially designed to be played on smartphones, which is why this type of control exists in the PC version as well.
Throughout your questing, you will find
different masks, hats, outfits, and pets to collect and wear, but these are
strictly aesthetic, giving you no perks or powers. For that, you have potions,
but there is not much need to use them, as the game is not very difficult.
The story revolves around Lili, who
finds herself on the mysterious island. During the game, she will try to rid
the island of the enemies, who all belong to an oppressive regime. If this
sounds too political, trust me, it isn’t. It’s cartoonish and trying to be funny
but failing most of the time.
The quests that you do, apart from the
main story line, are almost all silly. A big problem is that there is no kind
of a quest log which could show you on the map where you are supposed to go. I suppose
this is also due to its humble beginning as a mobile game.
As I said in the beginning, this is one
of the games that I finished only because I started it. I hate leaving games unfinished
unless they are really frustrating or just plain stupid. Lili never went into either
one of those categories, although at certain points it strayed close to it. Even
though I was initially impressed by the graphics, I was never intrigued by the
story nor enchanted by the characters.
Luckily, the game is not very long, as
it can be completely done in about three to four hours. So, if you have nothing
better to do, or have some time to kill, play Lili Child of Geos, and solve
various quests on a magical world.
